After somewhat sporadic rain, the veld around the Drakensberg has come alive with a variety of fantastic flowers, bringing with them a myriad of birds, bees and butterflies to the gardens around our accommodation.
Here at Treks, Trips and Trails, we were recently privileged to witness the birth of two golden breasted buntings. The nest was built into one of the ferns just outside our sitting room window. Then the eggs appeared, and soon after the two ugliest little ‘critters’ hatched! We were absolutely amazed that chicks of that size came from such small eggs! They grew quickly and flew off, presumably with Mum, after just 2 weeks.
What a wonderful experience and a reminder of just how lucky we are to live surrounded by nature here in the Drakensberg. Here are just a few pictures taken from our garden over the last few weeks:
